Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are second-graders in a New York City Title I School. Many students in my class are ENL students meaning their first language is not English. They are at a variety of levels in their language acquisition. The students in the class are culturally diverse. In addition, for some families, it is a financial challenge to provide all the school supplies necessary for success. Regardless of these challenges, my students are enthusiastic and eager to learn.

It is important to me that the students in my class have fun while they are in the classroom but also feel that they are in a safe learning environment!

They learn best while using a variety of tools, strategies, and resources. On a daily basis, they are engaged in acquiring new literacy skills, math skills, and hands-on science or social studies exploration. My goal this year is to further support their social-emotional learning this year due to the many hardships they have experienced as a result of COVID19.

My Project

In order for my students to be present in their learning, many of them need to know how to process the many emotions swirling around due to this pandemic. I want to put Social Emotional Learning at the forefront of my classroom and help them develop emotional literacy and a growth mindset. This will help them overcome the challenges they are facing today as well as hopefully stay with them through all the bumps and curves of life.

Emotional literacy is an important piece in educating the whole child.

We can not dismiss the emotions that our students have. These books will help kickstart class discussions around emotions and allow children to open up and express themselves in a safe and supportive environment.
