My Project

Our students are incredible! They are navigating the pandemic stress and adapting to the high academic expectations of middle school. Sometimes things feel very overwhelming, and that's when having a peaceful place to de-escalate is most important. I am still adding materials to make my classroom feel less institutional and more like an escape-on-campus/student lounge. The more relaxing the space is, the easier it is for students to open up and share what is troubling them.

With the addition of meditation cushions, a floor lamp instead of the overhead lights, and faux wood gym tiles, I will be able to segment out calming corners within the large space.

Our students use this room during lunch and nutrition, as well as throughout the day for individual counseling and risk assessments.

Additionally, you, the generous donors of Donors Choose, helped to fund the amazing meditative walking labyrinth that we were able to paint outside the classroom last June. Our students use this daily, but we've observed that a protective shade sail over it would increase its utility even more. The high Los Angeles Valley heat can make staying out on the blacktop for long periods of time challenging during many months of the year. The addition of an extra large sun shade will allow students to access it any time of day, any month of the year, without adding the stress of the elements to their already stressful days.
