Emotional Regulation to Improve Success in the Classroom

My Project

As an occupational therapist, working with students to improve self-regulation, sensory processing, and emotional understanding is critical to help support success in the classroom. The materials that will be funded with this project will help my students have access to materials and activities that make it easier to understand this higher level executive functioning skills.

Students that have difficulty with regulating their emotions and processing the sensory input of the classroom environment often have barriers to typical classroom engagement and participation.

The fidget devices, sensory disks, and weighted materials are devices that help student explore different sensory input that can increase classroom regulation, which can in turn increase attention and demeanor in the classroom. The emotion plushies, feeling coins, and emotional regulation charts offer a fun way to play and discuss topics that children often avoid. Increasing their emotional awareness and the impact of their emotions can help decrease frustration for both the student and adults when they are experiencing a large emotion such as frustration or anger.
