My Students

I serve as a school counselor at the BEST elementary school on the planet! OK, I might be a little biased, but our school opened this year under pandemic conditions and despite the challenges, it's an AMAZING place to be for students and staff! My co-counselor and I serve students K-5 by facilitating social/emotional lessons, small group and individual counseling, and school-wide initiatives. Our students come from diverse backgrounds. We are striving to become a No Place for Hate school that allows all of our students to feel loved, respected, and supported when they walk through our doors. Their social/emotional needs are higher than ever due to an increase in anxiety and stress that all kids have faced this past year.

My Project

We are in the process of transforming a classroom into a space for students to receive small group counseling support, regulate their emotions, and participate in other school counseling activities. We will dedicate an area of this space to emotional regulation. What is emotional regulation? Emotion regulation is the ability to exert control over one’s own emotional state. It may involve behaviors such as rethinking a challenging situation to reduce anger or anxiety, calming feelings of sadness or fear, or focusing on reasons to feel happy or calm.

We envision the emotional regulation station area of our room to be a comfortable, soothing area that students can actively explore their thoughts and feelings in healthy ways to help them regain control of their emotional state and return to their classroom regulated and ready to learn.

The Cube Organizer will not only help store the emotional regulation sensory items and SEL books, but it will section off the area to create a defined space for emotional regulation and emotional learning to take place. The top of the Cube Organizer can also be used as a table for SEL artwork and more. This will be a space where social emotional learning takes place!
