Emotional Regulation in the Classroom: Using Sensory Tools

My Students

CEC is a unique educational environment for at-risk students in grades kindergarten through 12th. Our school is a cooperative program for students who have intensive emotional, behavioral, and academic needs. We are striving to implement trauma-informed care for our students to foster healthy relationships and whole-child growth.

Our students are a very diverse group when it comes to backgrounds and experiences but overall are united in their need for a different kind of education than what the typical school provides.

We implement many alternative strategies to support our students to create a sense of belonging and personal empowerment. Many of our students find that within our walls they are able to feel success for the first time in an educational setting.

My Project

Chana Education Center is an alternative school service 13 different school districts grades K-12. We are student-center focused and work closely with the student and their families to provide tools and strategies to help them regulate their emotions despite the adversities they face.

The students we educate have a variety of disabilities including; Autism, Emotional Disorder, ADHD, Anxiety, ODD, and Cognitive Impairment.

Students are taught to use sensory tools to help them regulate their emotions when they are feeling stressed, anxious, dysregulated, and overwhelmed. These items are readily available in our classrooms and sensory room for student use.

Through social skills training in the classroom and social work we are able to help coach our students into learning what tools work best for them and how to appropriately use these tools. Flexible seating in the classroom helps students maintain focus through movement while maintaining themselves in the classroom for optimal learning.
