My Students

I teach in a title I school in Brooklyn, NY. My students are creative, kind, and enthusiastic about learning. They come from diverse backgrounds and speak a variety of languages. My students try their best even in difficult situations but it is apparent this year is tough on them. This pandemic has made learning difficult for them due to many unforeseen circumstances. They are learning to cope with fear and stress. Even though it's a challenge, they are still attempting to show up and learn.

We are an ICT classroom and my students need to be exposed to books with characters that they can empathize with and that teach them how to deal with challenges in life.

A variety of books with characters that reflect my students will help them with their emotional wellness and teach them to deal with difficult situations.

My Project

Many of my students this year had to deal with fear and anxiety due to the pandemic. Many were afraid to leave their houses or be near each other in the classroom.

By providing my students with books that show how to deal with anxiety, how to make choices or books that show how characters react in difficult situations, I am hoping to show them that stress can be contained and controlled.

In these books student will meet characters that rely on friends and family, as well as their own wit to overcome difficult, tricky or stressful situations. As a result, they will learn to rely on themselves and their peers in time of stress and expand their emotional resilience.
