Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a first year counselor in a high poverty area. No day is typical, in fact each day is very different. My students need help in regulating their emotions as well as learning empathy (walking in others shoes). Resources to teach this are highly needed!

My students are all wonderful and unique.

They each have a very different story to tell. Some come from middle class homes, but most come from very low income families and are homeless. These students come to school every day and are so eager to learn, but some of them struggle because their emotional needs are not met on a daily basis. They need to be understood and loved while at school. We do our best to make this happen for every student, but the more resources I have, the better I will be able to meet our diverse needs.

My Project

My students need books such as the Feelings and Emotions library and soft and safe figurines to express their feelings. Students will use the books in guidance lessons and small groups. The dolls and other materials will be used for small groups and individual sessions. These items are imperative to have. We know children often can not express themselves through words, but what they express through play tells the whole story. If I am able to create a "play" area I will be able to learn so much more about my students and in turn be able to help them grow and achieve both emotionally and academically.

All 500 students will benefit from your generous donation. My goal for transforming my counselor's office is to increase academic success, decrease discipline referrals, and most importantly show all students they are loved at school.
