My Students

My school is located in inner-city Los Angeles, and many of my students come from low-income families. Often, their parents work multiple jobs to make ends meet and cannot always provide even basic school supplies for their children. Many students also do not have regular access to books and literacy, or even regular homework support. They, therefore, rely heavily on the teachers and other school staff to support their academic needs. Despite this, however, they are an eager bunch of students who come to school ready to learn new things every day. They are inquisitive about how things work and why things happen, and even though I don't always have the answers, they trust me to guide and teach them the best I can.

My Project

My students listen to me read a new classic storybook every week and then spend some time afterward "reading" the same storybooks from a collection of books we call Star Books. These books, with such rich storytelling language and memorable characters, are always popular with young, emergent readers.

Having multiple copies of these fun, wonderful titles will allow many students to read these books at the same time.

Because they have heard them read over and over again, they begin to memorize the text, while matching what they say orally to what is written on the page, which is a significant part of the building beginning literacy skills.

The books in this project are going to replace the first set of Star Books I requested and received seven years ago from a previously funded project. Those copies have been very well-read and are in desperate need of being replaced for my current and future students to read and enjoy.
