My Students

I am a second grade special education teacher teaching in a low-income neighborhood. My students are composed of new immigrants from China and families with low-income. Families in this community rely heavily on schools to help broaden their children’s experiences and interests. Parents work long hours simply to make ends meet and rarely have time to take their children to explore the world beyond the hectic confines of their neighborhood and take advantage of the diverse cultural experiences that the city has to offer.

Moreover, my students have special needs, compounding with this epidemic, leads to a more difficult and frustrating situation at home.

My Project

These basic school supplies and books are needed for one of my students to continue learning at home during this pandemic. As you know, remote learning is inequitable, not all families have the means to afford a computer and access the internet. Thus, teachers need to find a way to supplement students' learning. These supplies will keep my student motivated to learn, and ease the financial burden for the family.

The school supplies are needed to help my student practice writing, reading, math as well as other subject areas like art, computer, and science.

The books will help prepare my student for the new character series unit. The kinetic sand helps with my student's sensory and attention issues, as well as building her creativity when there is free time at home.
