My Project

Our country is a "melting pot" with so many different races and cultures! That's what makes our country unique and special. Every year, I love embracing and learning about my students' cultures.

In observation of Hispanic Heritage Month, I introduce to students the importance of celebrating the contributions, histories, and cultures of American citizens whose ancestors came from different countries (i.e.

Spain, Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean). Since my class makeup includes students from all over the world, I welcome ALL of my students to share their heritage and culture with their peers.

This year's Hispanic Heritage Month theme, Todos Somos, Somos Uno: We Are All, We Are One , highlights the wide range of cultures, ethnicities, and perspectives in the Hispanic community and the power of the community's diversity.

What a more wonderful and very fitting theme to embrace all of my students' backgrounds. So, I created a media assignment for my fifth graders to record a 3 minute video, sharing their heritage and culture. They share what their culture celebrates and WHY it is special to them. The students use pictures, flags, among other materials to display some of their customs and traditions.

I believe this activity allows our students to learn about each others' cultures and traditions. It brings value to our heritage and cultures. It provides students knowledge about other backgrounds, becoming more culturally aware. More importantly, students learn to accept the uniqueness and differences of each individual, as their cultures shape their identities, values, and beliefs.
