Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Every year I am given a different challenge and last year's students suggested to me that I need to bring a bigger challenge to my students and with the upcoming school-year, I will continue to do so.

Teaching gives me an opportunity to work with a diverse group of students with different literacy backgrounds which may include students who need english language development skills, behavior development and improvement, special education needs, and occasionally the students who felt they were just never good in their english class.

My classes usually include the students that struggle not only on a social and emotional learning level, but in some ways academically as well. The students in my classroom show great progress in wanting to accomplish their personal and academic goals and this shows in both their assignments and their behavior.

My Project

After exploring the coming-of-age genre through reading and writing, creating their own children's book, and identifying this theme in a film, I believe I have managed to get my students interested in reading. Now I want to expose the next class to the wonderful world of graphic novels!

For this project, I selected specific graphic novels to explore various topics, diverse cultures, generations, characters that overcome adversity and discover something about themselves.

Requested titles include Illegal, Rising Above: How 11 Athletes Overcame Challenges in Their Youth to Become Stars, This One Summer, Friends with Boys, and Hey, Kiddo.

Part of their own coming-of-age story is exploring what and how they learn about themselves through the world around them and I believe graphic novels will bring them that opportunity.
