I am a NYC teaching fellow who understands that not everyone can follow just plain old talk and chalk. I teach math and science to special education students. All of my classes consist of eighth graders - one class is a bridge class combined with seventh graders. The community in which I teach is a very high need community. The school I teach at is a title one school. My school has a large number of special education students. My students are the last. The last to find out about school trips, the last to receive books and the last to be remembered. My students require step by step instruction and visuals in order to learn. When completing math problems I must go from desk to desk so students can watch as I work the problem out on their papers. This is a great way to lose the attention and focus of other students that are waiting on me. If my students were able to watch as I complete math problems it will greatly increase their own mathematical skills. The Elmo will help when presenting science projects, step by step math problems, teaching how to use a scientific calculator, and displaying my rubric next to assignments to score an example. The use of an Elmo will bring my classroom and students to life. My students love it when I bring any learning tools into the classroom. I know that you will make a difference in the lives of many students who want to learn. Students who can learn, and will remain challenged through the use of an Elmo.
