My Students

My students are English Language Learners (ELLs) in Harlem, New York, from Latin America, West Africa and Yemen. They struggle with academic and social English, but want to learn as rapidly as possible to assimilate culturally. Yet their ability to read is below grade level.

Students learn important collaboration skills working with other classrooms while improving reading levels.

Because their need to read is so great, I base my instruction on communication skills in reading and writing. In my 8 years of teaching in high-poverty urban schools, I noticed ELLs who read the most integrate more successfully in the general classrooms.

My students get excited researching environmental and social problems. These "Problem"-Based Learning projects allow them to offer solutions, including over-use of plastics; invasive aquatic plants in the Hudson Estuary; and prevention of communicable diseases (by washing hands). We collaborate and share our project findings online with other schools on international platforms, such as iEARN.org. I embed reading skills in hands-on projects so they learn to read while engaged and invested in their projects.

My Project

I created the ELL Department at our school in 2010 and nurtured its successful development. I am a confirmed participant and need support to attend the Teachers College Summer Reading Institute this August 2018. As head instructional specialist for ELLs in our middle school, I base my instruction on literacy skills using the F&P Benchmark and Red and Gold Leveled Literacy Intervention sets. All of our ELLs are below grade level reading. My role has evolved from ELL teacher to "coach of subject teachers" (while teaching my normal caseload). I saw the need to coach ELA, Math, Social Studies, Science, and Art teachers on differentiating their respective lessons in order to teach "my" ELLs in content classrooms, so the coaching involves weaving ELL strategies into all these curriculums and standard.

I teach phonics and guided reading to include topics that straddle the curriculum in order for ELLs to pass the annual NYSESLAT.

Outside of this teaching job, I also coach a small team of subject teachers in an Ingenuity Team project called “Pre-empting Long-Term ELL’s” at the NYC Men Teach initiative of the NYC Dept of Education.

The teaching texts I use inform my instruction and coaching on many levels, particularly in placing the most emphasis on literacy, phonics, and language progressions in all subjects In all subjects, word recognition, sentence production, and eventually good writing come from being able to read (decode and encode) letters and words in English. For these reasons, I request the leveled set to use after the TC Summer Reading Institute, August 2018.
