Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I teach an incredible group of English Language Learners with autism at a school in the South Bronx. My students are bright, enthusiastic, and eager to learn. They’re working hard to master foundational literacy skills, such as identifying letters, learning letter sounds, storytelling kits, and recognizing sight words.

Many of my students also face behavioral challenges that make it difficult for them to stay focused during traditional lessons.

That’s why it’s so essential to make learning active, fun, and hands-on.

I’m requesting interactive alphabet materials—like alphabet bowling games, letter puzzles, and touch-and-read sight word sentences—to help my students learn in a way that feels more like play than work.

Alphabet Bowling will help reinforce letter recognition and sounds while getting students up and moving.

Letter Puzzles will build letter-sound connections and fine motor skills at the same time.

Touch-and-Read Sight Word Sentences will support emerging readers with tactile, visual, and language-rich experiences.

In addition to hands-on alphabet activities, I also use interactive storytelling with books like "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" to spark conversations and develop language skills. My students light up when they can retell the story using props, pictures, or sequencing cards. These moments create natural opportunities for speaking, listening, and vocabulary growth—key areas for English language learners.

My students learn best when they are active participants in their learning. These hands-on materials and storytelling tools will not only help them build critical reading and communication skills but also give them opportunities to move, explore, and have fun in the process.

When learning feels like a game or a story they love, my students stay motivated, focused, and confident. With your support, I can make literacy come alive and create a classroom where every child feels successful.
