My Project

In our district, in the last two years we have had a significant increase in our ELL population. Our current curriculum does not suit their needs, and we are unable to differentiate with reading on their reading level. Due to this, I want to plan a project outside of class time where we will be reading and then writing a collaborative book of personal narratives. The bilingual picture book will be our first read, to help them to better read in English and build their comprehension. The second book is an all English picture book that is culturally responsive to their immigrant experience. We also need a bookshelf to house the books because we only have one shelf in our room, which is already filled. These students also have a lot of behavioral issues and come from rough home life situations. An opportunity to tell their stories, bond, connect, and have intimate discussions is so needed for them to grow and develop and to feel safe in our school community. These texts will help them to learn to read as well as inspire them to tell their own stories. It would be a tremendous opportunity to be able to work with students with texts that are accessible to their current reading level. They deserve this chance.
