My Students

"A picture paints a thousands words"- The first line in the song "If". English Language Learners rely on visual cues to help give meaning to learning. To ELLs, a picture can paint a thousand words. An ELMO Visual Presenter can open up a world of visual learning in my first grade ELL classroom.

ELL or LEP students are US fastest-growing population and are expected to make up one out of every four students by 2025.

You can see the increase of diversity, even in our small rural Wisconsin community. Each year about 25-30% of my first grade students are English Language Learners and the number continues to grow. My classroom is an ELL support classroom in which our ELL teacher and I co-teach. Our school is a K-5 building with five classrooms for each grade level. Ethnic diversity of our students is primarily Hispanic, but also includes Hmong, Siberian, and Albanian. Having an ELMO Visual Presenter will allow me to enhance student learning for not only my ELLs, but for all my first grade students.

My Project

An ELMO Visual Presenter is one of the newest pieces of technology to hit the classroom. It is basically a mounted camera attached to a digital projector that allows you to project documents and other objects onto the board for your class to see. It not only replaces an overhead projector, but has endless opportunities for visual learning in the classroom. One way I could use the ELMO would be to project picture books on the wall so that all students could view the pictures and text with ease. Another application would include doing category sorts (with pictures, vocabulary words, etc.) with all students. I could also use the ELMO with science observations to ensure all students can view our experiments. These examples are just a few ways the ELMO could be used. Our classroom just recently received a projector in our classroom provided by our Parent Teacher Organization, which is required for use with the ELMO. The addition of an ELMO would be a wonderful classroom tool.

For ELL students, oral instructions can be difficult to follow.

Many English Language Learners rely on visuals to help them understand their work. An ELMO visual presenter will help ELL students bridge the gap between oral instruction and understanding.
