This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have the amazing privilege to teach 130 AMAZING students who overcome every obstacle that they are faced with each and every day. Those circumstances (Hurricane Harvey, poverty, single-parent homes) may make others cower with fear or fail to weights of the world.

My students break barriers and continuously overcome challenges by working hard, having grit, & remaining resilient against the challenges of inner city life.

My students are 85% Hispanic, 13% African American/Black, 1% White and 1% Asian Pacific Islander. 80% of my students are the English Language Learners and 20% are identified Gifted and Talented.

My Project

My students are assessed on a standard in which they must be able to analyze and critically think to answer STAAR questions about topographic maps. This is a difficult concept to grasp and explain through video and pictures. Houston isn't a very mountainous locale to use a real-world experience for my students.

Students will research an elevation and build a 3D model of the mountain.

Students will then switch model and few details with another student so that the elevation, contour line, and contour line interval can be calculated and identified.

When we design 3D models, my students are able to better prepared to understand abstract concepts such as calculating the elevation of a mountain from a 2D map.
