The most effective means of battling obesity is through cardiovascular exercise and resistance training, and it is vital that we utilize all available resources to help curb this trend. Our goal as physical educators is to instill a lifelong fitness mindset and an overall positive attitude towards exercise. We strongly believe that heart rate monitors can be an extremely effective tool to encourage student buy-in and achieve these goals for the following reasons:
Heart rate monitors provide definitive evidence regarding the level of rigor put forth by each scholar during exercise.
Allows both teachers and students to set attainable goals based on conclusive data.
One of our daily goals might be for scholars to exercise at a vigorous intensity level (85% of maximum heart rate) for a specific percentage of class. Heart rate monitors make it simple to determine whether scholars are achieving the objective at any given moment, and if they are not, how close they are to attaining it.
There is little room for dispute regarding scholar participation during class, as heart rate monitors remove any guesswork or interpretation of effort from the workout.
Some students might not be physically capable of performing as well as others, but that does not mean they aren’t pushing themselves at or above the level of rigor as the class athletes.
This prevents teachers from making mistakes in assuming students that are physically healthier are working harder than others just because they look to be in better shape and/or are performing tasks more easily.
Builds community through healthy competition, as real-time statistics allow students to view who is exercising most vigorously throughout class.
Students can track their progress throughout the year, which can be particularly effective for those that feel like they aren’t seeing physical improvements in their bodies.
