This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Help me give my students for Crew (advisory) supplies to help them keep their binders and folders organized, a crucial executive functioning skill. I am a Crew leader at an outward bound school in NYC. Crew is like advisory, but different in the sense that the kids are equal contributors to the circles, discussions, and events that we plan together. I am not the teacher, but their crew leader. I have an amazing group of 13 9th graders in my crew. During our weekly academic checkins I see that some of them need help improving their organizational skills. Many them have the desire and drive to improve their organizational skills. They just need better tools to execute with ease. For example, they spend a huge time during academic check in days sharing the classroom's sole hole puncher to punch holes in their sheets and organize their binders instead of working on assignments. Partly because they have a hard time finding the assignment or notes in their binders in the first place.

Research indicates that strong executive functioning skills can significantly improve mental and physical health, enhancing overall quality of life.

That is why I added supplies like hole punchers & mini staples for each crew member. The goal is to help my students not get stressed out by the lack of organization. They won't have to wait until we meet during academic days, but they can keep their binders organized every day.
