My Students

Do you remember that book that you just loved as a child? Maybe it was the first book you ever read by yourself. Maybe you loved the characters, the pictures, the words. Maybe it made you laugh. For more students than I can count, Mo Willems has written books that fulfill that very need.

We are an integrated Kindergarten class in a NY public school.

Our students love reading, and we do it in so many ways each day. We do read-alouds, reading workshop with independent and partner reading. Children rush to finish their work and snacks to have the opportunity for more reading at the rug with their friends. We act out the stories and re-tell them again and again. The books are brought home (and then returned) to share with families too!

My Project

Kindergarten is the place where many students begin a life-long love of books. Kindergarten has become the place that most students discover that they can read, all by themselves! The five Mo Willems books we already have are worn with love: read aloud, re-told, acted-out, shared with families, and read at every spare moment by the children. Our students have an insatiable appetite for these funny books that they can relate to! There are so many more that could lead to a year-long shared experience instead of just a month-long "author study"

Nurturing an enjoyment of reading is one of the most important goals of our Kindergarten!

When teachers find an author that inspires students to such an extent as Mo Willems has for us, we need to have more to share! We love Mo Willems books and we love reading!
