My Students

One of my favorite quotes is "Be not afraid of greatness" from Shakespeare's Twelfth Night. This quote hangs in my classroom and pervades through my teaching as my students and I explore the various ways in which theater can bring us to knew understandings of imagination, literature, and ourselves

Close your eyes and imagine what a typical classroom looks like.

Maybe you see desks? Maybe you see chairs? Perhaps you see multiple bookshelves. Now, allow me to tell you about my classroom. I see over 700 students in K-5th grades each week. Open the door any day, and you will not see desks or chairs. You will see 30 to 34 energetic, eager students in an open space, on their feet, creating a scene, writing their own versions of Macbeth, reading and acting out scripts, creating a Perfect Society and writing a commercial to persuade visitors to come. My students are full of energy, they have diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds, and they come from every walk of life. Many of my students are current or former English Language Learners and speak multiple languages. They are smart, inquisitive, eager, and on their way to greatness.

My Project

Currently students in both second and fourth grades are working on projects that will culminate in creating movies or commercials. My second graders are creating an imaginary world known as Perfect Town. Students have created the laws of the town, a map of the town, businesses in the town, and they each have their own jobs to make the town succeed. They are working on the final piece of Perfect Town, writing and creating commercials. The fourth graders are working on a Macbeth unit. To culminate our play study, students will be creating their own 5 to 10 minute movie versions of the play. A video camera will allow these young people to not only learn a digital technology that will help them as they grow up, they will also have the experience of what it is like filming and sharing a real commercial and movie. Also, having a video camera will allow us to film our productions. This will allow the friends and families of our students to see them shine, even if they can't make the actual performances.

This is the inaugural year of our theater program.

Your donation will help by empowering my students to take ownership of their own theatrical ideas by allowing them to express and realize them in a way that is uniquely their own through digital technology. In today's fast-paced, digital world, it is hugely important for students to explore digital technologies in an academic and creative setting. Through your help, they will realize that there is a shining star in each of them.
