Elementary Robots: Help our students participate in FIRST LEGO League Explore!

In our robotics program through Hardy County Schools, we believe in sparking a lifelong passion for STEM through hands-on learning.

This school year, we piloted a robotics program in two 1st-grade classrooms, where students worked in small teams to engineer, build, and program LEGO robots with guidance from middle and high school robotics mentors. The program exceeded expectations, earning praise from students, parents, and teachers alike. Teaching teamwork, critical thinking, and real-world STEM applications, has become a highlight of the school year.

My school is a Title 1 school where all students qualify for free lunch due to low socioeconomic status. Historically, our community has had limited access to STEM opportunities, but the Moorefield Robotics Program is changing that. Nearly 100 students currently participate in competitive robotics, and we’re determined to grow that number to 150 by expanding this 1st-grade initiative to all classrooms next year.

To achieve this, we need additional LEGO robotics kits. These resources will empower more students to experience hands-on STEM learning and take on exciting engineering challenges. Working in teams, students will develop collaboration and problem-solving skills while exploring the season’s FIRST LEGO League Explore challenge. The best projects will even represent MES at the West Virginia State FIRST Robotics Expo, showcasing their creativity on a bigger stage.

This program not only benefits our 1st graders but also fosters leadership and mentorship skills in our older students, creating a powerful pipeline of STEM growth throughout our district. Your support will help us allow every 1st grader at MES to dream big, innovate, and thrive in an environment where STEM is accessible, exciting, and transformative. Together, we can inspire the next generation of engineers, scientists, and problem-solvers!
