Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are energetic, excited to learn, and very creative. I teach students in kindergarten thru grade 5. Most of my students are English Language Learners and have special needs. For many students, art is an area where they can feel successful and be proud of something they created. Even in passing in the hallways, students frequently stop me to ask about their art projects and share with my drawings that they are doing at home. Many students don't have art materials like markers, colored pencils, and paint at home, so the art class is a very special time for them.

My school is very large, and I see 700 students per school year.

I see half of my classes in their classroom and the other half in our school art studio. Because I see so many students, art resources don't last that long. However, my students are enthusiastic to work with any art materials. They really love clay and painting.

My Project

Each student will get their own portfolio folder to store artwork made throughout the school year. Students will decorate and personalize their folders which helps them to take pride and ownership of their artwork. Folders allow students to easily continue with projects, for example, they can save and store collage cut-outs in folder pocket and continue gluing next class.

Many of our elementary art students go on to apply to specialized middle school art programs, where they must show prior artwork in a portfolio.

Giving students the opportunity to have their own portfolios is very important to our art program. I want my students to understand the process of keeping and developing a portfolio from an early age. The folders also help me, as an art teacher, because I see 700 students per school year. Keeping artwork organized is huge and the portfolio folders allow the students, and I to easily show growth and development to parents, peers and on occasions school administration. Having these simple portfolio folders makes a really big impact on my job and my student's lives.
