Elemental Rainbow

Help me give my students new spectrum bulbs to study spectral analysis for elements. This helps to understand Bohr's model of the atom as well as identify how astronomical entities are identified by composition.

My Project

The idea of spectral analysis for atom identification can seem overwhelming to students, but it is essential to the understanding of quantum science.

With new spectrum tubes students can observe and quantify the spectral emissions of specific elements and relate that information to the formation of our currently accepted model of the atom.

The spectral tubes can not only be used on Chemistry for quantification of atomic orbitals, but also more qualitatively in Earth Science to talk about how astronomers study stars and other interstellar objects to determine the composition of them. Since each element has its own spectral analysis we have a "fingerprint" for the elements to be able to determine the composition of stars.

My students are always amazed to see the colors that, what they think are just boring elements, emit with just a little bit of electricity. We also relate this to the flame test for elements and talk about fireworks and why different elements burn in different colors.

I love bringing complex science to my students. Many of these youth have never been exposed to upper level science courses. Exposing them to little bits at a time will, hopefully, prepare them for higher learning and spark an interest in a science field. I love to see the looks on their faces when they start to put together all of the ideas from various disciplines of science and realize that they really are all related.
