My Students

I love how my K-6 science laboratory students always remind me of things that I had forgotten. For instance, years ago, I wrote a DonorsChoose project for a gas spectronomy power source, along with about a dozen different elemental gas tubes to use with this source.

Well, my returning students are reminding me that I promised to replace these spent gas tubes this year; I had better hop to it!

I understand my students' viewpoint: they (all 500 of them) want fresh opportunities to explore the color spectrum locked inside these gas elements. It's not just my older students that are gaga over this project. You wouldn't believe the number of kindergartners who have already picked hydrogen as their favorite gas!

Do I think these materials are essential for voracious STEAM students? You bet!

My Project

This project is far-more versatile than it appears at first glance. It covers physical science, environmental science, and, in a few special circumstances, space science.

Science students love this project best, though, because it directly works with 13 element gases and 3 molecular gases.

The 13 element gases are chlorine, sulfur, iodine, nitrogen, deuterium, argon, bromine, hydrogen, neon, krypton, xenon, helium, and oxygen. The 3 molecular gases are air, water, and carbon dioxide. Whew!

When electrified by the power source, all 16 of these gas tubes radiate unique color spectrums. Students will be able to narrow these unique color spectrums further by looking at each glowing tube with a square diffraction grating (which we already have).

The molecular gases of air, water, and carbon dioxide lend themselves to environmental and space science because they emit color spectrums that astronomical observers use to search for life on other planets. Pretty cool!
