Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
I teach students from diverse backgrounds who work together to overcome academic and personal challenges. They come eager to learn about the world around them and their role as future change agents. My science classes are composed of 10th-12th-grade students who are part of a district with limited funds. They work hard and often support their parents by running household errands, working part-time, or babysitting younger siblings.
I want to provide them with a variety of learning experiences that shows the relevance of science in their daily lives.
For this reason, I am working to incorporate hands-on activities and labs that connect the arts, literacy, engineering, health, technology, math, and community. Students need to see the connection between these areas and the sciences (i.e. STEM) as they plan for future college and career choices.
My Project
I have known of DNA electrophoresis since my undergraduate studies but my school does not have access to such technology. I had the opportunity to see an economical and small scale electrophoresis system created by MiniOne with the option of a class set of 10 systems. With the new science standards NGSS, and STEM education, we (teachers) try to bring real applications of science in the classroom.
Our classroom needs gel electrophoresis chambers and materials required to actually run a gel with real DNA so students can have a hands-on and practical experience in their science class.
This will support our current education climate that seeks to prepare our students for 21st Century STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) careers.
