My Students

My students are a diverse and dynamic group of 6-8 graders attending CSS in Portland, Oregon. We are a focus-option K-8 public school that relies on inquiry and offers students opportunities to research and discover answers to their own questions. Our school utilizes integrated studies, simulations and Storyline curriculum to present students with provocative essential questions and a classroom that values collaboration, rigor, and curiosity.

Our school is a K-8 focus-option public school in Portland, Oregon.

We strive to help our students become critical thinkers, courageous problem-solvers, and compassionate community builders by providing classrooms that offer opportunities for students to design their own projects and find creative means of communicating their learning. Our middle school has mixed-grade classrooms that integrate language arts and social studies. My classes have a mix of sixth, seventh, and eighth-graders who learn from each other and model responsibility and study skills to one another.

This project will specifically benefit students in our Electronic Music Production elective. This course offers students some of their only exposure to music instruction in middle school. It introduces them to music theory and a variety of genres and challenges them to produce their own tracks to share.

My Project

Students will be using entry-level music equipment to take their learning to the next level. Rather than being limited to cumbersome web-based music apps, my students will use real electronic instruments to make beats, explore rhythms, compose melodies, and collaborate with their classmates. The equipment we chose makes music production accessible to all students, no matter their previous music training.

These new instruments will help my students learn the basics of music production as they explore their musical talents and experiment with synths and sequencers.

Once they can make real music on these real instruments, my students will be able to share their music and even perform for their peers.
