Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a vibrant bunch of boys and girls who just want to be able to learn just like everyone else. Their intellectual disabilities often prevent that from happening. They all have different backgrounds. My students are a mixture of nationalities, languages, and disabilities. This is part of what makes them special. What they have in common is trauma, poverty, and a desire to learn despite their disabilities. Most of these are not qualities they are proud of, but they deal with what they are given. The results are mixed, but their drive never stops.

My Project

My students learn in many different ways. Some learn with repetition, some learn with games, some learn with hands on activities, and some learn best with electronics. We have everything available in our classroom...except the electronics. We have Chromebooks, but it is difficult for my students to use something that is not touch screen and that they cannot interact with as well due to their disabilities.

Hands on technology will help my students learn in a way that is meaningful to them.

Learning apps on tablets will give my children opportunities to interact with their education in a way they haven't been able to in the past. Apps loaded onto the iPad and Kindles will allow my students to learn from and with familiar characters that will encourage them along the way. They will be engaged in ways that I cannot engage them. This will increase the time they spend in learning activities, and increase their actual learning!
