Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My urban fourth graders may come from homes where they lack economic advantages but they are inquisitive and smart, and they LOVE science. It is the one subject where every child in the class can excel. I strive to provide as many hands-on science lessons that connect to language arts and math as I can. Our next integrated unit, "Electrify It!" is designed to introduce the concepts of circuity, measurement and descriptive writing. This unit will culminate with a highly motivating project. My twenty-one students will be organized into seven teams. Each team will be given a medium sized cardboard box to turn into a doll house with two rooms. First, they will begin by creating a blueprint of their house, which means they will have to calculate and recalculate area and perimeter to plan their layout. Before they cut out the windows and make doors, they will need to draw the templates on their boxes using measurements and right angles. Next, they will need to wire the house with bell wire to three electrical miniature lights, an appliance (created with the use of a mini motor)and the correct number of D-cell batteries so that they can all be turned on with switches. Each team will have to devise a parallel or series circuit to make it all work! The teams will then have to measure and hang wallpaper (no one wants their electrical wires to show!) and create scale sized furniture. Finally, each team will write a real estate advertisement to describe their model house. Unfortunately, my district does not financially support such authentic learning experiences. My $125 budget must be spent on paper and pencils. As the children work together to design a doll house with electrical circuitry they will learn not only the concepts and standards for science and math but also how to apply them, to work as a team and to think creatively.
