Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Learning Science requires lab experiences! My students want to build circuits and experiment with magnetic fields. Help my students think critically and fall in love with Science by exposing them to the joy of hands on Science.

I teach 92 bright and enthusiastic 6th graders in a urban public school in DC.

They come from diverse educational, economic, and cultural backgrounds. The students are curious and love hands on activities. They really learn the science concepts by applying the results of laboratory explorations. The visual and hands on reinforcement, as well as the real world applications, really tie the concepts together. My students are always asking when we can do more labs and I try to do at least 3 or 4 mini-explorations a week to keep their thirst for knowledge alive. However, being at a school with limited resources, it is often difficult to obtain all the materials I would love to incorporate into their experiences. With the beakers and graduated cylinders, I will be able accomplish more explorations.

My Project

With these materials, we will be able to complete a variety of hands on labs and investigations during our electricity and magnetism unit this year. Students will use the new batteries and resistors, along with materials we already have in the classroom, to create series and parallel circuits, electromagnets, and motors. Students will be able to compare batteries of different voltages, try different resistors in their circuits, and see how the changes they make in circuits impact the circuit. This will lead them to better understand the mathematical formulas that govern circuits. Students will also use the magnets to experiment with the strength of magnetic fields and to build motors. In addition, the Arduino kits will help students who are ready for enrichment to begin working with breadboards and building more realistic circuits. With these supplies, students will apply what they are learning while building the skills of scientific investigation and inquiry.

Learning through labs in the only good way to learn in Science.

Please help provide my students with an investigation based electricity and magnetism unit, filled with questioning, observation, and inquiry. Please help spark a love of Science in my students!
