Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Labs make science come alive! My students are eager to learn and ready to work hard. Help us get the lab supplies we need for an engaging exploration of electricity and electromagnetism.

I teach around ninety 6th grade students every day.

These students come from all across the District of Columbia to attend our public charter school. To attend, students simply have to apply and win a lottery system, there is no achievement requirement. With students from every ward of the district, we have a huge range of diversity within our classrooms, including many ELL and special education students. The students are enthusiastic and ready to learn. They truly enjoy hands-on science experiences, often naming them as the "high" of the day in afternoon advisory. I hope to be able to provide them with even more authentic experiences within the classroom.

My Project

These materials will all be used in hands-on, inquiry based lab activities. As we study electromagnetism and electricity, my students will build and compare various circuits. The different batteries, wires, and bulbs will allow my students to create unique circuits. Students will be able to use the multimeter to see amps, volts, and ohms and how these values relate to the circuits they have built. The students will also have the opportunity to design investigations. Students can compare different batteries and solar panels, or test different types of lights. As students write their own lab questions and design procedures to test them, they are practicing their critical thinking skills and acting as real scientists.

Building a wide variety of circuits will greatly enhance the study of electricity for my students.

Please help electrify our E&M unit so my students can enjoy an authentic laboratory science experience.
