Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Vibrant, is the best word I know to describe the students at my school. Serving the Hickory Hill neighborhood of Memphis, TN, our school, strives to meet the needs of our various students. 400 (+) Kindergarten thru 5th grade students, walk through our doors every morning, each different and unique. As a Title 1 school, each of our students receive free breakfast and lunch each day.

While funds are often limited, our goal of providing our students with a quality education, is not.

My school is in the business of guiding our students toward success, and striving for excellence in everything they do. We hope to instill our students with the tools they need to achieve great things in their everyday life.

Within the Art classroom, each student is pushed not only to create, but to think critically, communicate efficiently, and collaborate with their class and school community. Students are challenged to apply the skills they learn within their science, math, and ELA classes, to their art assignments. The work they complete is exemplary, showing their ability to overcome all challenges, in the best possible way!

My Project

Students will be learning about electrical currents this year during their science classes. Students will also be learning about the history of stained glass, and how it was used in churches to educate the illiterate population, during Medieval Times. Why not combine the two lessons to develop an amazing artwork?

Through this art project, students will learn basic wiring techniques to power their artistic lamp, providing an application for the knowledge they are gaining in their science class.

Students will additionally learn about the history and functions of stained glass, and then create their own glass artwork using melted acrylic beads, already purchased for the classroom. Students' acrylic "stained glass" works will be used to form the lamp shade for their lamp, allowing their artwork to literally shine bright in the darkness.
