Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have been a general music teacher in a metropolitan school district for 13 years, and for the past 4 years I have been fortunate to teach at a middle school. I am excited to provide students with opportunities to express themselves through music at this challenging and critical age when students have so much potential, creativity, and curiosity.

I am dedicated to teaching and to providing my students with opportunities to create, compose, and improvise on classroom instruments and using technology.

In my general music classes I teach over 320 students a year. Students are in grades 6-8, and range in age from 11-15 years old. Ninety-seven percent of the student population identifies as Hispanic, and ninety-eight percent of the student population is low income. Students participate in musical activities ranging from electronic composition, performing, improvising, and composing on guitars and ukuleles, to world percussion where students learn to play music from the Caribbean and Africa.

My Project

Many middle school students dream of being on stage as musicians. In this project I am requesting an electric ukulele to be added to the instrumentation of our after school Rock Band, and to be used by middle school general music students. In this band, students play electric guitars, acoustic guitars, acoustic ukulele, the drumset, keyboards, and sing.

With all of the amplified instruments in the band, it is difficult to hear the acoustic ukuleles.

The addition of an electric ukulele to the band will make the musical texture of the band thicker, and make it easier to hear chords and melodies played by our ukulele player. The school already has enough amplifiers so once the electric uke is received, our ukulele player will immediately be able to join the band. The band plays modern rock and pop music, and plays at school functions. Through performing students learn of harmony, chord structure, tempo, and music elements in addition to stage presence and music history. Thank you for your donation!
