This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have been a general music teacher in a metropolitan school district for 14 years, and for the past 5 years, I have been fortunate to teach at a middle school. I am excited to provide students with opportunities to express themselves through music at this challenging and critical age when students have so much potential, creativity, and curiosity.

I am dedicated to teaching and providing my students with opportunities to create, compose, and improvise on classroom instruments and using technology.

In my general music classes, I teach over 330 students a year. Students are in grades 6-8, and range in age from 11-15 years old. Ninety-seven percent of the student population identifies as Hispanic, and ninety-eight percent of the student population is low income. Students participate in musical activities ranging from electronic composition, performing, improvising, and composing on guitars and ukuleles, to world percussion where students learn to play music from the Caribbean and Africa.

My Project

The resources I’m requesting for this project, mini electric pianos, are desk-sized battery pianos which will be used by middle school general music students. In music, class students play the acoustic and electric guitar, drum set, and keyboard.

However, we only have 1 keyboard in the music room and the entire class wants to learn to play!

With these mini keyboards, students will learn to play the piano in rotating groups in music class and will allow more students to develop keyboard skills so they are able to play piano with the ensemble. Students will improvise, learn about and perform chords and melodies with your donation. In the after school group, students will use the keyboards in the Rock Band ensemble and during performances for the school and community.

The keyboards will be used to teach students music performance skills, improvisation skills, and music theory and music history. The keyboards will be used by over 330 middle students during the year and will be reused for years as students perform, create, and study music. Thank you for considering this project.
