Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Current events occur every day but many students are often not aware of what's going on in their city, let alone their country. With the election so close, I want to incorporate these events within the social studies curriculum. These books will jump start our inquiry study on the election.

I am an ESL teacher at a New York City public school.

I teach English through thematic units that are based on the NYC science and social studies scope and sequence as well as the Common Core Standards. My students come from diverse backgrounds, including the Dominican Republic, China, Yemen, and Jordan. They attend a Title I school in New York City. All of these students are English language learners. My students range in their English language proficiency levels. Some are recent immigrants, while others have lived in the US for three years. My students are eager to learn not only English but content as well.

My Project

Every year I create a unit that incorporates current events within the social studies or science curriculum. This year, as students are learning about being citizens and members of a community, I want to add to their experience and knowledge the election process and how voting works. It is important for students to continuously make connections with what they are learning in school to what is currently happening in our community. These resources about elections and patriotism will give the students an opportunity to explore the election process. I will use these resources during read alouds in the classroom as well as give students access to them as they are learning about what is happening in their community.

These books will make a huge difference in the classroom by providing the students with resources they can use to broaden their own curiosity.

These books will build their foundation in being responsible citizens and becoming contributing members of our society as adults.
