Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach second grade ESL. Teaching is something I have always been passionate about. As an undergrad at UMASS Amherst, I studied Spanish Language and Literature and Portuguese with a focus on education. Four years ago, I began my Masters program at UMASS Boston where I studied Applied Linguistics. Applied Lingustics is the study of how languages are learned. Today, I am teaching students from various backgrounds with varied needs. Due to the pandemic, I will be teaching from home and I am in need of resourses to help reach my students.

This past year, I had the unique honor of teaching second grade ESL in a lower income school that over 1,000 students call home.

I coteach, with two other incredible teachers. Together we share students that are both EL (English Learners) and mainstream (native speakers). I work closely in small groups with my EL students in reading, writing, and mathematics. This way our EL students are exposed to grade level content and rigor which is imperative to their acadmeic success.

My Project

The materials that I am requesting will help with distance learning this fall. This year, we will begin learning remotely. It is important to have a dry erase easel to display during Zoom calls for visual learners. Chart paper will also be used to create graphic organizers as well and saved for future use. I also requested picture cards with common words for my newcomers as well as ten frames to help solve addition problems in a more visual way. These manipulatives will be very helpful and will help students stay engaged during distance and virtual learning.
