Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a teacher at an inner-city school region with a large, diverse population of students with special needs from low-income families. The students at our school are eager learners looking to find a safe and secure place to learn. Many of our students are from immigrant families from Cuba, Puerto Rico, Honduras, and other South American countries that are faced with many challenges. Our school provides a home for a diverse and cultural community. Many of our students participate in the Head Start Program.

Our school looks to promote diversity and inclusion in a Title I school in which our students come from diverse backgrounds such as very low-income families, at many times below the poverty line.

Ninety percent of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch. Our school is located in the heart of one of the lowest socioeconomic neighborhoods where many parents do not speak English. Within my classroom, I also have several students that are English Language Learners as well as special needs students with a variety of challenges such as ADHD and learning disabilities. These conditions can make it difficult for students to learn, and they can benefit from any aid or assistance.

My Project

Our students are attempting to learn from home in an environment that is very different for teachers and students. Currently, we do not have access to our normal learning materials and have had to make the difficult switch to virtual learning with limited supplies. Many times our students have trouble hearing the digital content being played as the school computers do not have the capability to transmit quality levels of sound. Also, as a teacher I spend countless hours trying to find and create digital resources to use in my virtual teaching that aligns with my content.

With a teachers pay teachers gift card and speaker I will be able to upgrade the quality of virtual learning to meet my students needs and provide them with an effective learning environment.

The gift card will allow me access to content that is grade and standard aligned and already catered to the digital world. The speaker will allow me to transform my school designated computer to allow for quality sound when playing online and digital content. With these supplies, I will be able to avoid many technical issues that I currently face and inhibit my ability to provide an effective learning environment.
