My Project

I've taught English Language Development (ELD) for students who are brand new to the United States for the past three school years and I will be teaching it this upcoming school year as well. When I tell people that I teach students who speak a variety of languages and tend to speak very little to no English, they always assume that communicating with the students is the hardest part of teaching ELD. However, the hardest part is that the curriculum provided for them isn't close to being sufficient. I've taught ELD for newcomers in two districts and they both purchase a workbook curriculum produced by National Geographic. The mistake these workbooks make is that they assume that if a student is older, they don't need the basics of learning a language like the alphabet and phonics.

It doesn't matter how old a student is, when they're learning a language they need to start with the basics of that language.

Since the workbooks don't cover the basics, I have spent all of my prep time for the last three years trying to find alphabet, phonics, sight word, and grammar basics resources that the workbooks skip. I've also spent well over a thousand dollars purchasing materials to try and help my students. Spending all this time finding resources has often meant not having time to give students' work the amount of feedback I'd like to in order to aid in their growth. It also means sometimes settling for resources that are just an okay fit for students' needs rather than a great fit because the best materials are not something I can always afford to purchase myself. A TPT gift card, sight word resources, and the books in this project will allow me to have a bank of resources readily available to serve the diverse language needs of my students.
