My Project

El Mundo Mágico del Español: Expanding Bilingual Literacy for Equity: El Mundo Mágico del Español (The Magic World of Spanish) is a bilingual literacy initiative designed to enhance access to Spanish- language books for students at our elementary, a Title I school in Rowan County. This project supports equity in education by ensuring that all students, regardless of background, have access to quality literacy resources that foster biliteracy and cultural awareness. While the initiative will have an immediate impact, it is designed to remain sustainable over time, benefiting future students and newcomers for years to come.

Objectives:

• Expand Spanish-language book collections in

classrooms and the Media Center, aligning with the Science of Reading.

• Strengthen bilingual literacy instruction through professional

development for teachers.

• Create an engaging and inclusive reading environment to foster a love for learning.

• Increase family involvement through bilingual literacy workshops and take-home reading programs.

Demonstration of Need: As the only Dual Language Immersion (DLI) program in Rowan County, our school follows a 50/50 Spanish-English model. However, a shortage of Spanish-language books limits students' ability to develop strong literacy skills in both languages.

Research shows that biliteracy enhances cognitive flexibility, problem-solving, and academic achievement. Without equitable access to Spanish books, students in this Title I school face barriers to fully developing bilingual proficiency, which is essential in an increasingly globalized world.

Use of Funds

• $5,000 – Spanish-Language Books: Expand classroom libraries and the Media Center.

• $5,000 – Classroom Literacy Resources.

• $3,000 – Library Seating & Décor: Create a welcoming bilingual

reading space.

• $2,000 – Community Engagement: Host bilingual storytelling events.

By funding this initiative, we promote literacy equity, ensuring that all students—especially those in a Title I school—have the tools to thrive academically a globalized society.
