My Students

With the COVID epidemic, our students are having a harder time fitting engaging S.T.E.A.M.-centered classes into their schedule. Our school has fewer class offerings, and students need to fill their schedules with prerequisites. The Oscats FIRST Robotics Team helps fill that void. The team gives students an opportunity to delve deep into S.T.E.A.M concepts and increase their understanding not just of physics, design, and computer science, but it also shows them how S.T.E.A.M concepts are applicable in many careers paths.

In the Oscats, everyone is welcome, and everyone brings something wonderful to the table.

The First Robotics Competition challenges teams to design, build, and program a robot from the ground up. Each year the game is different and each game has many challenges. Our students have a range of learning styles and abilities, and in this team, each member is able to share their perspective as they lend their unique talents to help solve the challenges together.

My Project

One of the magical aspects of the First Robotics Competition is the way students are able to envision unique solutions to the challenges and then work together to create their vision. One thing that holds them up is when they do not have all the tools and resources on hand to build what they design.

A band saw will help the students create mechanisms more efficiently in house rather than relying on borrowing or mentors taking pieces home to construct.

An arbor press will help keep the inspiration going by allowing the students to easily attach or remove motor pinions and bearings. Currently, they are attempting to do this with hand tools that are not always accurate. This can lead to device damage or off-centered installs.

An impact driver will allow multiple people to create at once (currently, the team has one drill). It will also accommodate students with smaller hands to create easier.

The competitions consist of long days with a lot of necessary innovation in-the-moment as new challenges present themselves. At a recent off-season competition, we realized that having a few chairs in the pit will allow students to sit and rest their feet while brainstorming solutions.

Together, these items will help the Oscats in the years to come.
