My Students

My students are very special to me because as a resource teacher, I get to work with them long enough to see their growth and needs over the years. My school is located in an inner city low social-economic community in California. About 80% of my students are also English Learners. My students all have some sort of disability which impacts their learning. For example, students with auditory processing disorder need visual support in addition to the oral instruction to understand the lessons. In addition, students who have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder have an extremely short attention span and have difficulty focusing on instruction or task.

Given all the learning challenges my students face daily, they still come to my resource room for extra support with unbeatable zeal, happy smile, and strong motivation to learn.

I try to include different strategies in my instruction to meet their individual needs, such as using multi-media, visual presentation, and hands-on learning activities. Among the strategies, I found that my students learn best with multimedia instruction since their attention span is very short and multimedia integrates sound and visual that catches their attention. quickly before they lose it.

My Project

Even though the students in my resource program may have their unique learning needs, they demonstrate one common interest in using technology. Last year, my school purchased this online reading program, LexiaCore5 for the whole school and my students were all very excited about using the program. This program is an intervention reading program which starts with letter naming, phonological awareness, phonemic awareness, phonics skills, reading passages and finishes with passage comprehension. It suits the learning needs of my students since most of them are reading at two or more grade levels below their grade levels.

The interactive features of this online reading program integrate sound, graphics, and speaking capture the attention of my students, even the ones that usually have a hard time settling down.

However, my existing computers don't always work and we don't have working headphones for the students to use for this program or other online learning programs.

To make this LexiaCore5 online reading program an effective reading program for my students, we need working headphones and two more HP chromebooks. My plan is to use this program to go along with my phonics and reading instruction in the small group setting. My goal is to improve my students' reading at least one grade level up this year by effectively using this program with sufficient computers/chromebook and headphones.
