Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a Special Education teacher in a New York City public high school. I teach 9th and 10th grade self-contained English and resource room. The disabilities of my students include speech/language impairments, ADHD, dyslexia, Asperger's, severe emotional disturbance, and more. All of my students are bright, motivated people who need that extra push to succeed. I am touched and inspired by their ability to face these tremendous obstacles.

My students have difficulty learning via conventional teaching methods. Many of my students are visual and/or kinesthetic learners and need to interact with the material in order to truly absorb it. My students recently played an educational game entitled Parts of Speech Bingo. I was truly amazed by the positive feedback I received from everyone in the class after playing the game for the first time. I have never seen my students so excited and eager to learn. The visual, interactive, and competitive aspects of the game allowed every student to become involved.

At this point, I only have access to one educational game. I hope to incorporate games into my classroom on a regular basis. In order to do this, I need more educational games to reinforce the learning that takes place in class.

Your help will ensure that my Special Education students are better able to understand grammatical concepts. My students desperately need to be stimulated and engaged in order to learn. I am confident that this engagement will occur while using these educational games.
