My Students

I'm a 6th grade special education teacher for a 12:1 class at a Title I intermediate school located in Brooklyn, NY. I work with diverse students who struggle with learning disabilities, autism, ADHD, ADD and language development. Most have developed a negative attitude towards schooI. I, along with the rest of the special education team at my school, fight every day to make learning a positive experience for these students. We want our students to gain a love for learning and look forward to coming to school every day.

My students are all very unique and require a lot of individualized learning techniques.

Each student has a different learning need, behavior management need and range of abilities. Most of my students struggle with reading and writing, which affects their learning in every class. I strive to make my students learning environment a positive and comfortable one for optimum growth. I attempt to teach through engaging materials that keep them interested and make learning fun.

My Project

I want to include educational games into my classroom as a way to engage my students and keep their minds working. These games will be used as rewards, as well as be incorporated into ELA lessons throughout the year. "It's in the Bag" and "Figurative language in a Jar" will support students descriptive language, "5 second rule," "Say the Word" and "Mad Gab" will help students memory and grow their word relationship, "Word Slam" and "Boggle" will used as an engaging tool to practice site words and spelling, puzzles will be used as rewards and to build teamwork, "Never have I ever" will be used to support classroom conversations and debates,

In addition to helping the students with reading, critical thinking and word association, playing the games together will increase teamwork and help build a positive classroom environment.

Adding games to learning provides support to learners by rewarding them with instant feedback, acting as visible motivation, presenting them with challenging (but achievable) goals, and having them work together within the classroom community. I strive to create a resulting learning environment of engagement and positive reinforcement.
