My Students

In today's world, hands-on activities that incorporate several subject areas are considered the most successful in determining student success.

I teach in a Montessori school in southern Florida.

My students are an absolutely incredible class of gifted and talented kindergarten and first grade students. Science is a large part of the Montessori curriculum. The Coral Reef and Everglades Habitat Mats are a wonderful way of bringing these ecosystems to life in a way that children can manipulate the plants and animals. Food chain charts are included, as well as an animal fact file, sentence and grammar cards (describing the relationships amongst the species, and even math problems that correspond to the ecosystem. We cannot bring a coral reef or the Everglades into the classroom. We need these mats to keep the students actively engaged in their work and study of science.

My Project

Students will be able to learn a great deal while using these mats. They will enjoy setting out and labeling the different plants and animals. The grammar and sentence cards will lend themselves to sentence construction and the mechanics of language while the math cards will reinforce mathematical skills.

The Everglades and Coral Reef ecosystems are so relevant since we have them right here in Florida. Students visit these areas with their families. Manipulating and working with these mats and materials will allow them to synthesize what they learn and apply it to real life experience.
