My Students

Our closest river is a concrete flood control channel. We have a classroom river aquarium, but nothing to put in it but water. Can you imagine? Just water? With the addition of gravel for a river bottom, plants, and animals like fish, frogs and snails. My class can become stewards of nature.

Armed with a natural curiosity about the environment, my 4th grade students want to observe nature up close.

They are mostly second language learners and many have never traveled outside of the city. My students attend an inner city school in Southern California, and don't often get to interact with nature. They are frustrated with the limited equipment we have, and yearn for more.

My Project

Life science is hard to understand when you can't see it. With a complete river habitat in our classroom, I can help my fourth grade students see the miracles of life, and how delicate the balance of nature is. My students develop an interest in their surroundings from movies such as, Furry Vengeance, I want to bring it to them in meaningful ways. With the accessories kits, plant kit and lesson plans we can give them a very personal experience with nature. Hopefully they will be inspired to preserve and protect our planet's natural resources, with a river they are responsible for in their own classroom.

Imagine a river without plants or animals?

The most my students will be able to observe is water, not too exciting. Now just imagine a complete river habitat, plants, and animals both above ground and below the water. A river full of life just waiting to be explored. Now that is something worth observing!
