My Students

8th grade Social Studies is one of those classes that teaches it all: U.S. History, economics, government, geography...we do it all! Everything, that is, except incorporate current technology into our lessons. I teach junior high Social Studies in a small rural district in southwest Mississippi

Most of my students come from homes that have a hard time making ends meet during most months.

Many of my students lack home computers and internet access. Their exposure to the wonders of the world is limited to what they get at school. I try to bring the world alive through the use of multiple resources, including the internet. Unfortunately, our district budget won't allow upgrades and updates to technology as quickly as technology improves.

My Project

We study everything from U.S. history to geography to the global interaction of our economic and political systems. We want to investigate everything from the Declaration of Independence to the effects of the recent global financial crisis. We can do this with just one up-to-date computer notebook with a fast processor and a webcam. By incorporating this bit of technology into my lessons, I can expand the world knowledge of every child in all my classes. Not only can we talk about the great architecture in Europe, for example, but we can take a virtual tour! One notebook computer is all it takes to open the way!

There are multitudes of teachers and students across the globe who are willing to partner and share with other classrooms.

Social Studies truly comes to life when there can be socialization around the country and the globe. We have the internet connection. We need the technology to allow us to do it all in this global age! Thank you for considering my request.
