This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are part of a S.T.E.A.M. (Science Technology Engineering Arts and Mathematics) magnet within our elementary school. They come from various socioeconomic statuses and cultural backgrounds, and have a wide range of learning abilities/needs. Our school is part of a small, tight knit community, with kind, caring students, and parents stay involved as much as they can. Our school is part of LAUSD, which is the second largest school district in the country. A percentage of our students are brought to school from other communities on buses to attend our magnet program.
My Project
Following the Lucy Caulkins curriculum, Students in my class each have their own book bag where they exchange their books for new ones each week from the class library. They also complete weekly word sorts. They keep their books in gallon size ziploc bags and their word sorts in snack size ziploc bags. Students are rough on their bags, and rips/tears happen often, causing them to need a new bag and creating more waste. Having reusable silicone bags that are more durable to house their books and word sorts is a great way to show students how to reduce waste and take care of their materials.
