My Students

My students will do anything to learn and experience new ways to accomplish a goal. My students have different disabilities and would love the opportunity to access technology. I want my students to have multiple opportunities to increase their engagement in the curriculum and enhance their learning. I want them to be able to personalize their learning experiences to fit their individual needs when leaving the high school environment. Living in low socioeconomic areas limits our students' opportunities to see the latest technological devices that could be future careers. The world of work is changing, and we need to educate and show our students that by thinking outside the box we can establish a way of living.

My Project

As a therapist in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Because of the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences. My student are visual learners who need different ways to access information. The way we traditionally access information such as keyboard or textbooks tend to be difficult if you are unable to move your arms and fingers with controlled movements. However, using voice-activated systems will enable students to learn and accomplish goals that previously were difficult.

Many of my students are being raised in single-parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status.

These unfortunate situations may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with access to new technology that many of us see as "typical." From the minute they walk in the door of my room, I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives, but I can certainly control their experience and creativity of accessing information to pursue a career during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire our students to make the right decisions when making smooth transitions from high school to college or a career.
