Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine yourself holding a 2nd-3rd grade book in your 7th grade ELA class while everyone else is reading thick chapter books, newspapers or National Geographic Magazine. How would you feel? "Embarrassed," is what my loveliest beginner ELL told me while using a paper folder to shield her book.

Being a newcomer to an urban middle school, my beginner and some intermediate ELLs are excited yet nervous to face all the challenges at school.

Like all other students, they are challenged academically and socially. However, their language barrier sometimes hinders them in overcoming these challenges. Not all the students are understanding when it comes to interacting with minority in the classroom. My ELLs have shared experience of being teased because of the books that are reading. Some of them are able to ignore the teasing and continue to better themselves in learning, however, some shut down and refuse to read, thus, not reading enough to improve their English. Another struggle they have is unfamiliar vocabulary. Teachers sometimes overlook difficult vocabulary, especially in Social Studies and Science when technical terms are thrown around in the classroom.

My Project

Using the Kindle, my ELLs can read books of their reading level without the embarrassment. Since the public library offers free ebook, their ELA teacher and I can suggest appropriate books for them to read instead of digging into book bins of lower grades. Besides, the dictionary on the Kindle can help them comprehend better, thus, reading faster and more. Reading is essential for a second language learner, so I want them to feel comfortable and enjoyable while reading. Also, when assigning grade level articles for them, I can upload it to the Kindle so my ELLs can once again use the dictionary to assist themselves. During Social Studies and Science, my ELLs can use the Kindle to look for words instantly and focus on the content instead of wasting time flapping through dictionary.

ESL, compare to other intervention services, get much less attention and funding at schools.

My ELLs are responsible and independent learners. They need to be given the appropriate materials and resources in order to overcome their challenges at school as not all school teachers are trained to teach ESL and can provide what they need. It's my job as a teacher who concerns about their academic and personal developments to offer them the best.
