Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are building a sports program in East Harlem and our students crave opportunities to participate in sports. Unfortunately, there are not enough positive outlets for many students in our school and in the area. The East Harlem athletic consortium is working to provide these positive outlets.

The East Harlem Pride is an athletic consortium made up from three small schools in the area.

The surrounding area is impoverished and nearly devoid of healthy, active outlets for young people. Many students have grown up with a love for baseball and have played on the streets and in empty lots, but now they have the opportunity to compete on an interscholastic team. Our players are committed and dedicated to the team, the program, and each other. Most of the players have not had the chance to be a part of a real team and learn what it means to be a responsible team player.

My Project

Playing catcher in baseball is one of the most demanding and challenging positions, both physically and mentally. The catcher must be the leader on the field, controlling the tempo of the game, organizing the defense, calling pitches, and leading the pitcher to success. With this catcher's glove, we will be able to build young leaders behind the plate. The skills and responsibilities learned from such a demanding position will carry over into life and the classroom. The catcher must be intense, positive, smart, and aware. Our catchers will make the pitching staff better, our whole team better, and our whole school community better.

By securing a catcher's glove, we can focus on building a pitching staff, which is truly the foundation of a strong baseball program.

our students revel in the opportunity to be a part of something great. They crave the chance to be positive, supportive, and active. With this glove, we can provide more opportunities for students to learn what it takes to be a catcher in baseball, the most difficult and demanding of positions. These skills will spill over into every facet of their lives.
